Wow! oldie but goodie. I needed to hear this! I learned all the shapes (starting with A minor pent), etc, and was NOT even aware of the root. NOW, I realize the importance of finding the root, and just play the intervals surrounding. however, I glad I know the shapes, I just think about playing them differently.

Get a pen and paper and map the Am pentatonic shape all over the fretboard...then play it and learn it. Do that for each minor pentatonic shape. Concentrate on each root note of each shape. Note: Only map out 6 notes. Start on the root and end on the root. Doing this yourself is way better than any book or having someone do it for you. Took me 3 weeks to pencil out and memorize just Am. Get a slow Am backing track and a metronome, and you'll be soloing in no time. Another thing to note, the Am shapes connect nicely from one position to the next without gaps. The other positions do have gaps, but you'll figure it out!

Correction: Pent means five. Tonic means tone. Pentatonic means five tones/notes, NOT five.
